Analysis
2008-07-06 Race#1
ZAKEDOR (9) has been close in his three latest local tries and looks like he should earn his diploma today. He figures to show more speed against this group at a mile and should be in a perfect spot on the turn for home. LAST TRAM (11) was claimed out of a poor effort last out by leading owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey. He can be a threat today if he should run back to his prior effort over this track. LAFOLLETTE (10) comes out of the same race and is capable of landing a share of this.
2008-07-06 Race#2
BANDOLIER (1) forced the fractions before he faded last out in a quick allowance race. That was his first try against winners and he looks to be the best speed from the rail today as stretches out to two turns. CHRIS GOT EVEN (5) was an impressive maiden winner from just off the pace last out and can handle the step up to face winners with a stalking trip off the top choice. PERSHING (4) was claimed out of a winning effort last out by a sharp stable and a good trip makes him a part of the battle down the stretch.
2008-07-06 Race#3
DON’T LIE (9) got up for second against a much tougher field in a sprint. She has run well at today's distance and drops to the bottom claiming level and she deserves the edge over this group. STAR CREST (7) exits two tougher races and looks like she should be in a good position from the start for the Borel brothers. SEA SHIP (6) finally returned to her winning ways with a hard-fought victory over a sloppy track. She has always been solid at this bottom claiming level and figures at her best again today.
2008-07-06 Race#4
VEILED PROPHET (5) showed a strong turn of foot when he finished up quickly to win over this course. He has always shown ability and looks to have found a future on the turf course – and has a strong pedigree to back him up. LE DAUPHIN (2) was in perfect position throughout and got up to win over a decent field last out. He has never run a poor race and must be given a strong chance against the top pick. GO WEST BERT (9) was overmatched in the Grade II Jefferson Cup, but looks capable of a top effort as he returns to the allowance ranks.
2008-07-06 Race#5
ALFRED KENT (9) has been in good form of and is not ambitiously spotted for his first run under the Twin Spires. He has the speed to be on or near the lead and could be able to last against these. CAPTAIN CRYPTO (3) was second at this level last out when he shortened up and can be a contender with a repeat of that performance. GREAT COMPOSER (4) didn't seem to have any excuse when he faltered as the favorite last out, but is certainly the one to beat based on his previous starts.
2008-07-06 Race#6
BERLIOZ (9) adds blinkers and drops in class off three solid performances over this track. He returns to the main track and has shown the tactical speed to keep himself in position throughout. MR. GOODKAT (3) was unable to hold off the winner last out after setting the fractions and figures prominently again today. He must negotiate some added distance, but still looks capable of a top finish with his best. CUNNINGHAM (4) comes out of the same race as the top pick and had a bit of a troubled trip that day. He could be better on the main track and should be a threat in this field.
2008-07-06 Race#7
LITTLEPRINCESSEMMA (4) debuts for the Asmussen stable off a typical workout pattern of steady, but not particularly fast, drills. She sold well as a yearling and should be ready. DANCEYOURSOCKSOFF (10) has trained very sharply for the Lukas barn and has the pedigree to handle the distance. The stable is not usually known for having its horses cranked up for a top effort first time out, but this one has trained too well to ignore. SONG OF CHARM (9) is another debut runner with a long set of good works and a pedigree to come out running.
2008-07-06 Race#8
TRUE COURSE (3) exits a very strong allowance race in which he forced fast fractions but faltered late. He turns back an eighth of a mile from that seven-furlong distance, which should better suit his style. FOREST ATTACK (8) was unable to hold off the late charge of Vicarian last out, but has run competitively against some strong fields. FIRST REGENT (2) adds to the depth of this group as he comes out of the same race as several in here. He had trouble last out, but could rebound with a better trip.
2008-07-06 Race#9
MERIBEL (6) may not be quite at her best at a mile, but she gets plenty of early zip in the deep and contentious Locust Grove. She worked very well over this course and is proven in stakes company. BROWNIE POINTS (2) has competed well against top quality stakes company and seems to do very well at this distance. Her one local start was a good fifth in the 2006 Mrs. Revere and was beaten less than two lengths by Precious Kitten, who would be a heavy favorite in this group. BAYOU’S LASSIE (5) has put together two very good efforts, including an upset win in the Grade III Distaff Turf Mile here on Derby Day. SAY YOU WILL (10) and GENUINE DEVOTION (1) ship in from New York off winning performances for top connections.
2008-07-06 Race#10
TAKEDOWN (7) makes his third start off a long layoff and now takes a big drop in class. He could be rounding to a top effort from just off the pace against this well-matched group. VILLIANAGE (11) is solid at this level and is in good form as he makes his first start since being claimed. ME MY MINE (12) has good speed from the outside today and could be able to take this field gate-to-wire. PINPOINT (9) drops in class and fits well here.
2008-07-06 Race#11
VICTORY NOTION (6) showed improvement in his first start over the turf course. He had trouble when making his run that day and the eventual winner of the race came back to take a good allowance race. MONOGRAM (1) adds blinkers and has shown a little life in each of his turf starts. SHOW LOW (12) adds blinkers as he makes his second start of the year and could improve today. SIR JOCK (10) had had many tries and probably ran his best race last out. A repeat of that effort makes him tough in this group. FOREST WARFARE (11) was wide throughout last time out and could find a ground-saving rail trip today with Borel aboard.
Value Plays
2008-07-06 Race#8
FIRST REGENT (2) ran a disappointing race last time out, but he looks to be a solid contender if you throw that race out. He has been freshened for this race and has a garden spot in the two post with virtually everyone in the race looking to show speed.
2008-07-06 Race#9
BROWNIE POINTS (2) has turned into quite an impressive mare this year, chalking up a graded stakes win on the grass at Lone Star and runner-up finishes on the dirt at Oaklawn Park behind divisional leaders Zenyatta and Hystericalady. There do not appear to be any world beaters in here, which makes her a major threat to win.
2008-07-06 Race#11
BROTHER LOWELL (3) is the only horse in this race who has displayed any amount of early speed. He has finished second in back-to-back maiden special weight events on the grass this spring and looks poised to score a breakthrough win. The turf has been playing to inside speed throughout the meet and it would be appropriate for the season’s last race to play out that way.
