Fewer than three months after a tornado roared the stable area at historic Churchill Downs, restoration and repair work on barns damaged by the storm’s winds is complete and horses are moving into those structures to prepare for competition during the track’s Oct. 30-Nov. 27 Fall Meet.
The official event logos for Kentucky Derby 138 and Kentucky Oaks 138 were released Monday (Aug. 29) by Churchill Downs, and officially licensed apparel and gift items featuring the new marks are now available for purchase online at www.KentuckyDerbyStore.com.
Churchill Downs has been the scene of many historic races and special moments since its debut meet in 1875, but few of the track’s racing meets held each year since have seen as many historic ‘firsts’ – including an unusual blast from Mother Nature – as the 2011 Spring Meet concluded its 38-day run with an Independence Day program on Monday, July 4.
Churchill Downs will end its 2011 Spring Meet with a bang. The spring finale of “Downs After Dark” Presented by Budweiser Select is Friday (tonight) at 5 p.m. EDT (one-hour earlier than previously scheduled) and the 13-race card is billed as “The White Party” in which on-track guests are encouraged to wear an all-white wardrobe.
The first race for Friday’s “Downs After Dark” nighttime racing celebration at Churchill Downs has been moved up one hour to 5 p.m. (all times EDT) because it is now a special 13-race program.
Nearly 24 hours after a tornado tore through sections of the stable area at Churchill Downs, damage assessment and clean-up continued in the aftermath of the storm that hammered portions of the historic home of the Kentucky Derby.

For the second time in two weeks, Churchill Downs Racetrack will raise overnight race purses because of higher than expected all-sources wagering levels. Effective immediately (Thursday, June 16), overnight purses will increase 15 percent for the final three weeks of the Spring Meet, which concludes its 39-day run on Monday, July 4.
