Churchill Downs is in the spirit for this weekend’s Final Four appearances by the University of Louisville’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. The legendary racetrack’s iconic Twin Spires that sit atop the grandstand will be cast in a red glow throughout the remainder of the NCAA tournaments to honor its U of L neighbors.
The First Leg of the Championship Series on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by TwinSpires.com” concluded last weekend and now it’s on to the Second Leg, which is composed of the seven most meaningful springboard events in advance of America’s greatest race, the Kentucky Derby.
Simulcast wagering operations at Churchill Downs Racetrack (“CDRT”) will shift from their home in the track’s new “Parlay” venue back to their former location on the second floor of the track’s Clubhouse on Wednesday, March 27. Simulcast wagering will continue in that location through the conclusion of the April 27-June 30 Spring Meet.
The priceless solid gold trophy that will be presented to the owner of the 3-year-old Thoroughbred that wins the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) has arrived safely at Churchill Downs exactly 40 days before the big race on the first Saturday in May.
The roster of 3-year-old Thoroughbreds eligible for the 2013 Triple Crown has grown to 382 with the addition of 13 late nominations (pending late mail) to the coveted series of American classic races that includes the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum!
For most of three days of betting in the third and final pool of Churchill Downs Racetrack’s (CDRT) 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”), fans flirted with making unbeaten Verrazano (#20) the overall betting favorite. But, in the end, those fans could not commit to an individual horse as their favorite to win the 139th run
Trainer Todd Pletcher’s unbeaten Verrazano (#20), the favored individual horse in the first two pools of Churchill Downs’ 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”), is one day away from being the overall fans’ choice in the year’s final Derby Future Pool.
Unbeaten Verrazano (#20) has never been threatened in a trio of easy victories in his young career, but he emerged from the opening day of betting in Pool 3 of Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) as a very narrow fans’ choice over the always popular “All Others” (#24) betting interest.
While media and office chatter this week might be dominated by basketballs and brackets, Churchill Downs offers a question that also serves as a gentle reminder: Are you ready for the 2013 Kentucky Derby?
The First Leg of the Championship Series on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by TwinSpires.com” wraps up this weekend with the $550,000 Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Racing Spiral (Grade III) on Saturday and the $800,000 Sunland Derby (GIII) on Sunday.
