Wise Dan turned in a dominating performance and surprised a talented field of twelve rivals to win the Grade I Clark Handicap presented by Norton Healthcare by 3 ¾ lengths. The striking chestnut gelding also won the Firecracker Handicap (GII) on the turf on closing day of the 2011 Spring Meet. It’s safe to say Wise Dan enjoys running at Churchill Downs no matter if it’s turf or dirt!
It was a dramatic ending to the Churchill Downs training title race as it ended in a tie between Mike Maker and Steve Asmussen at 15 victories. This was the second time Maker has achieved the honor of leading trainer at Churchill Downs and an astonishing eleventh time for Steve Asmussen. Both trainers had Fall Meet earnings over $1 million. Congratulations to our Fall Meet leading trainers, Mike Maker and Steve Asmussen!
