Jill Byrne's Handicapping

  • Race 1 8-10-9

Next Right Thing (8) just missed in his local debut and came back to run evenly in his next outing. He has worked well for his return for sharp connections. Unbridled’s Note (10) debuts for a top juvenile barn and has been breezing consistently. He has a precocious pedigree and looks set for today. Battle Hardened (9) is another well bred debut runner for a good first out stable and adds to the depth of this strong group.

  • Race 2 6-13-3

Sweet and Lovely (6) ran well in her only turf try behind eventual stakes winner and top Breeders’ Cup contender Somali Lemonade. The return to turf today gives her a slight edge. Game Fair (13) merits a long look in her second try off an even debut effort if she can draw into the body of the race. Miz Ida (3) exits a key grass race and has worked very well since that start. She has a strong turf pedigree.

  • Race 3 2-1-5

Space Race (2) showed nothing on the Polytrack in the Breeders Futurity (GI) but should appreciate the return to traditional dirt today. His debut win at the tough Delaware circuit was impressive. Gemologist (1) looked sharp in his win at Turfway and will relish the added distance today on the track where is sire Tiznow won the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Timely Tally (5) seemed to improve when trying a distance of ground last out and will find a good stalking spot throughout.

  • Race 4 8-9-4

Sky High Lady (8) adds blinkers for her dirt track debut for a sharp stable. She drops in class from a good effort against stakes company and has the pedigree to improve with the surface switch today. Dancing Solo (9) raced evenly in her recent try and is another that has the pedigree to move forward over the Churchill surface. Ocean Bertie (4) had a tough debut trip from the inside post last out and can improve with the experience of that start.

  • Race 5 8-4-3

Quick Silver Song (8) may not have cared for the soft going on the turf last out and the strong stakes company as well. She has a strong dirt course pedigree and has worked well locally. Swift Artist (4) has been sharp in both her efforts and looks to carry her speed a bit further today. Amie’s Dini (3) was an impressive debut winner at Remington and can be a factor with these off that performance.

  • Race 6 11-9-5

Indian Ambush (11) debuts for a barn not known for their first out stats but has worked so well locally, has a pedigree to be ready to go and therefore gets the nod today. Wharton (9) can improve off his debut in the mud. He shows some good local workouts since then and is well drawn for today. Radiant Talent (5) has been very sharp in his morning drills and has a pedigree to fire at first asking.

  • Race 7 4-2-7

Super Saturday (4) ran very well in both his turf starts and should get a perfect race set up today. Godard (2) raced evenly in his debut on the Polytrack after breaking poorly and should improve with the added distance and the surface switch. Santonio D’Oro (7) exits a good performance in his only try and also has the pedigree to improve with the extra ground today.

  • Race 8 7-2-6

The Iroquois (GIII) attracts a compact but well matched group. Mr. Bowling (7) was a dominant winner of his last two and should be in a good stalking spot from the outside draw. Seven Lively Sins (2) was visually impressive in both starts and can handle the step up here. Hollywood Script (6) has a pedigree to improve with the surface switch and has worked very well locally.

  • Race 9 8-11-10

Tarpy’s Goal (8) faltered badly in the Sanford (GII) but has bounced back with strong workouts since. He was an impressive debut winner here and can make amends today. Sherp (11) overcame a rough start and battled gamely in his debut win in a quickly run race. Mr. Prankster (10) has been consistent in all three starts and will get a strong pace to run down late.

  • Race 10 5-10-3

The Pocahontas (GII) attracts a strong group of quality fillies. And Why Not (5) was so impressive in her debut and then struggled with some excuses in two subsequent Grade 1 efforts. The one turn mile seems perfect for her style and she has worked well for this. Aubby K (10) was explosive in her debut and has a pedigree made for Churchill Downs. She looks to be a special filly who can handle the step up here. Georgie’s Angel (3) returns to Churchill Downs where she was a strong first out winner. She seems well suited to the one turn mile here.

  • Race 11 5-11-9-6-12

Molly Morgan (5) has worked well for her first start and has a strong pedigree. Delightful Magic (11) has had some chances but has yet to run a poor effort and is the one to beat. Knight of Thunder (9) is another debut runner for a top stable with good works and a pedigree to love the local track. Flame Run (6) and Original Kitten (12) look strong here too.
