Jill Byrne's Handicapping
Holiday’s Jewel (1) broke awkwardly last time out before closing with a rush at Aqueduct. Should improve off that effort for top connections. Wine Princess (6) is a daughter of Azeri and will love the added ground today after closing fast in her debut. Finallyareallady (2) has raced consistently well in her first 3 career starts and should be the pacesetter today.
Lord Tarzan (10) has run consistently well for Derby winning trainer Motion and should get a favorable pace scenario today. Madris (7) improved in his turf debut while racing wide against a solid field at Fair Grounds. Monarchic (4) encountered trouble in his last race but will appreciate a return to the grass.
Delightful Magic (7) returns to the course where he scored his largest win and will be able to sit just off a hot pace. Ice Cream Silence (6) scored impressively off a layoff and shows solid local works. Malibu Holiday (3) transitions from turf to dirt for connections that win at a high percentage.
Funny Proposition (6) was rushed up after a poor start last time out and returns to the dirt where she was an impressive first out winner. Uptown Bertie (4) put it all together to win last time out at Fair Grounds and will appreciate the added distance. Crespano (1) daughter of Mineshaft should be the pacesetter for top connections.
Dancinginherdreams (10) makes her first start for Bill Mott and suffered a troubled trip last out. Frontside (3) will be the one to catch today and could steal it if not pressured early. Bouquet Booth (1) will appreciate the further distance and should be ready to fire today in her 3rd start off the layoff.
Plum Pretty (4) Kentucky Oaks winner was sensational in her first start of the year and is the filly to beat. St. John’s River (2) was a fast closing second to Plum Pretty in last year’s Oaks and shows a consistent work pattern off the layoff. Afleeting Lady (1) hasn’t run worse than second in 4 starts at Churchill and will be closing fast.
Contested (7) was extremely impressive in her two appearances over the dirt at Santa Anita and runs for outstanding connections. Small Kitchen (2) will appreciate the shorter distance after trying a route in the Fair Grounds Oaks. Good Deed (3) was impressive last time out at Oaklawn and has run well over the Churchill surface.
Stephanie’s Kitten (3) seemed to tire slightly in her first race off the layoff but has worked sharp since that effort. Miz Ida (7) was strong in her win at Fair Grounds and will be closing late down the lane. Dame Marie (12) is a perfect 2 for 2 in her career and recently fired a bullet workout over the Churchill grass course.
Successful Dan (2) was very impressive off the layoff at Keeneland and has never been beaten over the Churchill Downs dirt. Nates Mineshaft (10) is the pace of the race and will look to extend his winning streak to five. Mucho Macho Man (4) ran well last out at Gulfstream in a winning effort and should get a good trip just off the pace.
Gung Ho (2) made a valiant effort at long odds in the Blue Grass and switches back to the grass where he scored his lone stakes victory. Howe Great (14) beat Kentucky Derby contender Dullahan on the turf at Gulfstream and should appreciate the switch back to the lawn but drew a poor post. Coalport (1) is royally bred for the grass and appears to be in top form after scoring in a tough Keeneland allowance race.
Broadway’s Alibi (6) has done nothing wrong and has the pedigree to handle the distance and track and gets the light edge in a well-matched oaks field. On Fire Baby (1) bolsters a perfect record at Churchill and has trained well since he last race. And Why Not (10) ran her best lifetime race here at Churchill Downs and has trained beautifully of late. Grace Hall (2) was a dominating winner in the Gulfstream Oaks and could sit just of the pace today.
Vuitton (6) faced very tough competition at Fair Grounds and is the pick in another tough maiden heat here. That’s Me (8) finished just behind the top pick last time out and could turn the table today with a slightly better break. Stellabymoonlight (9) off slow in her debut but exits a key race. Totally Tucker (3) was flying late in her debut at Fair Grounds and will look to pick up the pieces today. Crying on Saturday (10) tired in her first out but could hang on to close out the Super Hi – 5.
