Jill Byrne's Handicapping
Cave’s Valley (9) is a new face to the local scene and has run well versus better on traditional dirt. Gruenewald (3) has been the model of consistency at Churchill Downs and will be running late. Saviano (2) fits here on his best effort.
Avenstoke (2) drops a level and is a factor on his better efforts. Bauers Got Hours (5) is a bit inconsistent but faces the weakest field he has seen in a while.
Off Limits (1) takes the blinkers back off and drops out of Grade 2 competition. She gets a ground saving trip and a slight edge off her prior form. Cheery (6) steps up to winners off a nice maiden score and looks to be an improving sort. Toxis (4) had a tough trip last out and seems better suited to the two turns today
Sikura’s Gift (5) is well placed off the win last out for leading connections. American Kitty (2) goes back to the dirt and drops in class today. Sweet On Kitten (4) was a distant second last time out but may prefer the shorter distance today.
Danger Storm (3) was a blow out winner at the prior condition and is well spotted here. Numen Lumen (7) exits an even effort versus a stronger field and can move forward in his second try off a layoff. Caldo Cat (6) had a wide trip when third at this level.
Maybelle Slew (7) is in top form and was claimed by a sharp team. Bressie (10) is another in good form and looks tough at this distance. Learn The Lingo (4) chased the top pick last out and goes for a new barn today.
Magic Hour (9) ran very well in her debut and has since followed up with a bullet workout for today. Indian Icicle (1) performed well in her first try and has been training well since that start. Greed and Fear (12) returns from a long layoff with a good series of morning drills and looks set here.
Karlovy Vary (3) is a Grade 1 winner and now returns to her preferred surface on the turf for top connections. Artemus Kitten (9) drops out of a strong Grade 3 race where she also had a wide trip.
Cal Nation (2) returned to the races with a hard fought victory and should love the local surface as a son of Distorted Humor. Golden Frontier (1) was an eye popping winner in his local start and a repeat of that effort makes him the one to beat today. Noble’s Promise (6) has been a bit off form but drops in class out of a top stakes field.
Floral Sky (5) didn’t run the fastest time when winning her debut but was visually impressive to overcome some trouble and has worked well since. Blueeyesintherein (3) bids to give the connections back to back wins in the Debutante (GIII) and could not have won easier in her debut. Richie’slilcowgirl (10) goes for a new team today off an easy win on the Polytrack. Her pedigree suggests she should excel at Churchill Downs.
Whitewood Indian (7) drops in class, tries the dirt today and looks to improve here. Tigers Love Pepper (2) was a good second in his debut at this level and a repeat of that effort makes him a factor. Wound Up (8) is a top threat if he can get away from the gate cleanly. Zellers (3) and Seal Rock (6) look to round out the top five.
