Jill Byrne's Handicapping
Race 1 – Brown Eyes Blue (2) was an impressive debut winner here and then faltered in her next out in a tough stakes race. She has trained well for her return. Brotherhood Singer (7) turns back in distance and shows a sharp recent work for this. Queen Cumulus (4) has been solid in three tries.
Race 2 – By Golly Molly (8) had a tough trip from the rail post last out and can do better from the outside draw today. Dancinginthecircle (1) had an equally rough trip in the same race but will have to overcome the inside post. Lady Of Luck (2) returns to the dirt and shortens up in distance.
Race 3 – Praia (8) ran a big effort in her debut and has trained well locally for today. Oblahlah (13) will be strong if she draws in the race. Private Ensign (4) has trained well for her debut and has a top pedigree. Saratoga Whistler (10) should move forward.
Race 4 – Northern Lion (1) had a solid debut run behind a next out winner and has the pedigree to excel on the Churchill surface. The Candidate (6) has trained well for top connections and looks set for his first out. Ration (9) is a well bred runner from a barn with strong statistics.
Race 5- Hitechnoweenie (1) has two good grass races and can improve back on that surface today. Intelyhente (12) is a debut runner from a good barn with a strong turf and distance pedigree.
Race 6 – Bradester (10) was a distant second in his debut and has put in two nice workouts since then. Cowdray Park (7) has had many tries but is always close and bred to succeed at today’s conditions. Proud Strike (8) has a similar profile to the top pick and will also like the distance.
Race 7- Brown Laddie (2) overcame all kinds of trouble to battle gamely earning a win in his debut. He trained well since and gets the nod in a well matched group. Tour Guide (11) faltered at two turns in a strong race and fits better sprinting with these. Tap And Trade (9) could not hold off an easy winner but may last longer here.
Race 8 – Sonofasamurai (8) has been strong in all turf tries and should get an ideal stalking trip. Craving Carats (4) is similar to the top pick and can be forgiven for a rough trip in a stakes race on the turf. Flying Bird (10) stepped up nicely with a win in his turf debut and can move forward here.
Race 9 – A well matched group lines up for the G-2 Golden Rod. Street Of Gold (6) steps up in class but has worked well locally, has a strong pedigree for Churchill Downs and overcame a wide trip last out. Cloudy Vow (5) raced evenly in the Pocahontas and can be a factor again today. Silver Strike (4) deserves a look off her form.
Race 10 – Rei (11) overcame a troubled trip to win his debut run and has trained well locally for this. Gulfport (9) exploded to an easy win last out and is a big danger here. Symphony Forty One (5) turns back in distance off a good runner up effort last out and would be no surprise here.
Race 11- The G-2 KY Jockey Club attracts a deep field of Derby hopefuls. Uncaptured (4) redeemed himself with an eyecatching win in the Iroquois and now must repeat that at the two turns. Dewey Square (9) is undefeated and has the advantage of a win under the Spires at the distance. Positively (12) made a premature move before being run down by the top pick late and can turn the tables today. Frac Daddy (6) was an impressive local winner and worked well since.
Race 12- Prado Cat (5) can improve in his second try on the turf. Channel Isle (2) has been facing solid company and running consistently with them. Mughaadir (8) and Rakete (4) fit in the Super Hi 5.
