Jill Byrne's Handicapping

  • Race 1 6-5-1

Do Dat Blues (6) ran a good fourth against open $25,000 claimers at Keeneland last out and has shown an affinity for the Churchill Downs main track having posted a win here last summer. Sweetonrich (5) should appreciate the turn back in distance after tiring in two route races and should be ready to race off a brief freshening. Wildie (1) dominated rivals last out at Fair Grounds which has earned her a chance to step up in class and will have Rosie Napravnik back aboard today. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 6-5-1

  • Race 2 5-7-1

Race 2 – Me Commanche (5) is a firster for Steve Asmussen who always has his babies ready for a big effort first time out here at Churchill. Bluesville (7) owned and trained by top conditioner Wesley Ward and appears to have slightly more impressive works than the other Ward runner. He’s Got Talent (1) has a tough inside post draw for the same top connections as the second choice. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 5-7-1

  • Race 3 3-7-1

Race 3 – Atajo (3) takes a steep class drop after tiring at Gulfstream last out and should like the turn back to the one turn mile. Portman (7) had a tough trip last out being steadied at the start and racing wide but could contend today with a clean trip. Dehere on Tour (1) posted a sharp work over the Churchill main track in preparation for today’s race and could upset the top two picks. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 3-7-1

  • Race 4 5-1-3

Race 4 – Spittin’ Feathers (5) gets the favorable equipment addition of blinkers and has been a very consistent performer at this level all winter. City Alert (1) won at first asking with the second placer finisher in that race coming back to win on Opening Night and will try to take the field gate to wire. Love My Life (3) takes a drop in class after a disappointing effort but gets another chance as he may not have liked the sloppy track at Oaklawn Park. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 5-1-3

  • Race 5 6-5-9

Race 5- Give Her Space (6) makes her first start for a claiming tag in her career for connections that win with regularity. Splurgess (5) makes her debut for Tom Amoss and has some fast early breezes in the mornings. With Polish (9) improved last out with the addition of first time lasix and should get a great trip. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 6-5-9

  • Race 6 2-10-3

Race 6 – I’ll Call (2) was an impressive first out winner at Keeneland and should have no problem with the added distance. Bold Challenger (10) ran a game race last time out just missing after leading most of the race and has a perfect record over the Churchill Downs Turf Course. Film Making (3) has been facing top competition at Gulfstream all winter but needs to show slightly more closing kick to challenge the top two picks. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 2-10-3

  • Race 7 4-8-2

Race 7 – Street Serenade (4) drops in for a tag for the first time after a poor effort last out but has shown the ability to win beating tough opponents in New Orleans. Inflamed Spirit (8) was impressive last out at Santa Anita and could get a great trip sitting just off the early pace. Reason to be Proud (2) faced a tough field last time out at Fair Grounds and should appreciate the drop in class. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 4-8-2

  • Race 8 6-9-2

Race 8 – Laugh Track (6) makes his first start over traditional dirt but his morning drills and pedigree show the switch to dirt should be no problem. Bind (9) exits Grade 3 competition at Keeneland and could be tough to beat if he regains his form from Fair Grounds. Awesome Bet (2) returns off a long layoff for connections that are known to have their horses sharp for return to the races. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 6-9-2

  • Race 9 6-3-1

Race 9 – Keep Up (6) is a perfect two for two over the Churchill Downs Turf Course and suffered a tough troubled trip last time. Big Blue Kitten (3) won a highly competitive allowance race at Gulfstream and has never missed the board at this distance. Turallure (1) broke slow and checked last out and figures to be primed for a big effort second start off the layoff. JILL’S SELECTIONS –6-3-1

  • Race 10 11-7-6

Race 10 – Weekender (11) stumbled after the break last time out going two turns at Fair Grounds. Gets the addition of Rafael Bejarano and will be tough to beat with a clean break. Caliparty (7) takes a slight drop in class after chasing better foes and has worked well recently. Philly R (6) had traffic trouble last time out in what appears to be a key race as both the top two finishers won their next races. He could contend with a good trip. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 11-7-6
