Jill Byrne's Handicapping

  • Race 1 2-7-6

Liberated (2) returned to the races after a quick freshening and is back to her preferred surface where she ran a solid third against graded competition. Natural Rush (7) out of graded stakes winning mare Lu Ravi, she seemed to finally put it all together last time out. Anahauc (6) has been a consistent performer with that last race being a throw out race as it was her first effort on polytrack. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 2-7-6

  • Race 2 10-4-3

Profetiza (10) was impressive in her debut just missing after leading most of the way and should be fit today. Allegheny Angel (4) was a fast closing second in her debut and pedigree suggests she should like the switch the main track. Kansas (3) may have needed that last race after a lengthy layoff but will be ready to fire today for strong connections. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 10-4-3

  • Race 3 1-6-5

Cozze up Lady (1) was impressive first back off the layoff and was a nice winner on the turf at Churchill Downs last summer. Koko Loca (6) has worked well leading up today’s race and will like the stretch back out to a mile. Cat Lore (5) was a consistent performer at Fair Grounds this winter against tougher foes and will be a pace factor. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 1-6-5

  • Race 4 1-8-7

Sweet Shirley Mae (1) has been chasing Oaks contenders and is running at a more suitable sprint distance today. Love Train (8) has run two quality races and the winner of her last start came back to win her next start. Magical Moon (7) suffered a tough beat after leading most of the way in the Beaumont (G2) and ran well in her dirt race in New Orleans. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 1-8-7

  • Race 5 10-5-7

Strike Charmer (10) has the most upside in the field after finishing a fast closing third after breaking slow in her debut at Keeneland. Zadina (5) has had plenty of chances to win and if she could find a slightly improved closing kick today could upset the top choice. Artful Lady (7) well bred daughter of turf star Artie Schiller will appreciate the added distance and could be a factor in the exotics. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 10-5-7

  • Race 6 4-2-5-3

Believe You Can (4) returns to the site of her 2012 Kentucky Oaks victory and has dominated rivals in her first two starts of the season. Authenticity (2) has been working well over the Churchill Downs surface and was a big winner two back. On Fire Baby (5) is coming off a gate to wire win in the Apple Blossom (G1) and will be the pace setter today. More Chocolate (3) could factor in exotics. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 4-2-5-3

  • Race 7 10-9-3-6

Wave Theory (10) was caught very wide last time out but with a better trip today and return to the turf she will be tough to beat. Tokyo Time (9) was bumped hard at the start last time and just missed against graded foes and has shown a tremendous improvement since the addition of blinkers two starts back. Kitten’s Dumplings (3) returns to the grass which will be a positive change with her pedigree and past performance on the turf course. Private Ensign (6) will make her first start on the turf and has shown signs of liking the turf in morning drills. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 10-9-3-6

  • Race 8 14-3-2-11

Calistoga (14) is a perfect two for two and has a tough outside draw today but the seven furlong distance should give her plenty time to clear the field and she is the horse to beat in a competitive bunch. Blueeyesintherain (3) has done nothing wrong in her career and has a perfect record over the Churchill main track. Fusaichiwonderful (2) has only lost one start in seven tries and that was versus Grade 2 opponents after a lengthy layoff. She will pressure the top pick right from the start. Daincinginthecircle (11) races at a distance she has yet to miss the board at. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 14-3-2-11

  • Race 9 8-7-6-4

Bourbon Courage (8) has faced quality competition of late and will be sitting in great position just off the early pace. Macho Macho (7) ran well off a very long layoff and has shown an affinity for the Churchill track. Take Charge Indy (6) will be in the hunt for the early and top jockey Rosie Napravnik retains the mount. Hymn Book (4) has been away from the races for a few months but is working sharp for his return. JILL’S SELECTIONS –8-7-6-4

  • Race 10 4-5-6-10

Noble Tune (4) finished a close second in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf and was a fast closing winner in his return after a brief layoff. War Dancer (5) overcame a very poor break to just get up in time last out and has improved greatly with the addition of lasix two starts back. Positively (6) adds blinkers today and seemed to appreciate the switch to grass last time out at Keeneland. Fire Guard (10) ran poorly last out but comes into today for top connections and can he dangerous if he gets a good trip. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 4-5-6-10

  • Race 11 4-11-2-8

The Longines Kentucky Oaks Unlimited Budget (4) has a perfect record coming into today’s race and has been training very well since her arrival at Churchill Downs. She will look to sit just off what could be a quick pace. Close Hatches (11) has impressed in all of her career races and will have top rider Joel Rosario in the irons. Midnight Lucky (2) dominated rivals in the Sunland Oaks and posted a bullet over the Churchill track on April 22nd. Dreaming of Julia (8) was a runaway winner of the Gulfstream Oaks and will be tough to beat if she can run back to that effort. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 4-11-2-8

  • Race 12 5-3-8-11-1

Double Gelato (5) was sharp first out just missing at Gulfstream and runs for a trainer known to be better second time out. Delilahjane (3) broke poorly and was flying late at Fair Grounds and the seven furlong distance should be perfect. Greek Life (8) ran just behind her stable mate Delilahjane after being bumped at the break. Sky Girl (11) was bet down to the second choice in her debut and tired slightly in the stretch but has worked well at Churchill Downs. In Kelly’s Defense (1) is a must use in the Super Hi-5. JILL’S SELECTIONS – 5-3-8-11-1
