Jill Byrne's Handicapping
Upkeep (2) ran a nice race last out at Keeneland and fits in very nicely with this field. Prosecution (6) is in good form and should sit a nice trip in this race. Doctor Peter (8) should do very well at the one-turn mile distance.
Rockford (7) switches back to the dirt and should enjoy this surface better than most of his previous races on synthetic or turf. Demander (5) did not fare too well over the Keeneland synthetic but should improve switching back to the dirt. Chas’s Legacy (6) has done very well in his two races over the Churchill Downs track and fits in well with this field after breaking his maiden impressively last out.
Boss Gone (10) is a nicely bred horse that should improve in his second career start. A Touch of Poetry (8) comes in off of a brief layoff but if he returns to his race two starts back, he will do very well. Reeder (2) ran an okay effort in his debut and has been working well into this start.
Kyriaki (10) ships in from California and just missed winning in his last two starts. She should do better switching distances to two turns. First Romance (8) ran a good race off the layoff and if she can return to that form, she will do well in this spot
Ulanbator (8) broke his maiden in a gutsy effort at Gulfstream Park over the winter and has been training very well into this start. Watery Moon (1) won very impressively in his maiden win a few weeks ago at Keeneland and fits in very well with this field. Twang (2) did well last out at this level and can improve in his second start off the layoff.
Centre Court (9) just missed in the Jenny Wiley at Keeneland last out and loves the Matt Winn Turf Course. Effie Trinket (8) finished just behind Centre Court in her last start and always runs a good race. Absolute Crackers (5) ran a bang-up race off the layoff in her last start and should sit a nice trip in this field. Tapicat (1) can grab a piece of the action as she gets her rematch with Centre Court and Effie Trinket.
Judy The Beauty (3) is arguably one of the best female horses in the country right now and she looks very tough in this spot. Midnight Lucky (8) has been training very well into this race and can be ready to go off of the nearly one-year layoff. Heart Stealer (2) had a nice turn of foot in her last start and should sit a nice trip in this field. Speedinthruthecity (7) makes a big jump up in class, has been very consistent in her last few starts and loves the Churchill Downs surface.
Global View (5) is a very well-bred son of Galileo and should do much better switching back to the turf. Picozza (10) ran a huge race last out in the Transylvania and has yet to run a bad race in his career. Storming Inti (8) is another runner in this field coming from the Transylvania and could improve switching back to the turf. Woodfield Springs (11) should sit a nice trip in this field.
Sahara Sky (4) just missed last out in the Carter Handicap and is in great form. Shakin It Up (11) has been doing very well in the morning training for this start and finished just behind Sahara Sky in his last start. Delaunay (10) simply loves the Churchill Downs surface and is a perfect 4-4 over it. Capo Bastone (1) comes in off the layoff from the Cigar Mile and is doing well training into this race.
The Woodford Reserve Turf Classic is too difficult to pick against Wise Dan (1). The Horse of the Year is simply a freak of nature. Kaigun (5) ran one of the most impressive races in his life last out and almost defeated Wise Dan. Seek Again (10) was very impressive in the Hollywood Derby in his first start in the United States. Admiral Kitten (4) can round out the exotic wagers.
One of the biggest things to look at in the Kentucky Derby is a horse who is improving and doing well training for this race. Intense Holiday (16) has been doing very well in the mornings in preparation for the biggest race of his career. California Chrome (5) is one of the most highly sought-after favorites in recent years for the Kentucky Derby. He has been very impressive in preparation for this race. Wicked Strong (20) ships in from New York for trainer Jimmy Jerkens and had a huge performance winning the Wood Memorial in his last start. Ride On Curlin (19) ran a huge effort in the Arkansas Derby just to make it into the field for the Kentucky Derby. He has run well over this track and it helps that he has Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel aboard. Danza (4), named after the television and movie star Tony Danza, ran a wildly explosive race to win the Arkansas Derby at giant odds to make his spot into the field.
Slan Abhaile (3) ran a good effort at this level in his last start and should sit a good trip in this field. Bull Dozer (7) always does very well at Churchill Downs. Positively (6) cuts back in distance and should sit just off the pace.
C J’s Awesome (2) is an extremely well-bred son of Awesome Again and is improving in each of his starts. Party Time (1) is just what this day is all about. This horse ships in from California and just missed in his last two starts. Awesome Sky (5) comes out of some productive races in the past and has finished behind a couple of horses who are in the Kentucky Derby. Saa Mi (3) should improve switching back to the dirt.
