Thorn Song Wins Sunday Feature

(June 8, 2008) – Zayat Stables’ Thorn Song took advantage of a hedge-skimming ride by Robby Albarado to rally to win Sunday’s $50,400 allowance feature for 3-year-olds and up at Churchill Downs by 1 1/2 lengths over Obi Wan Kenobi.

Trained by Dale Romans, Thorn Song covered the mile on firm turf in 1:35.24 in defeating eight rivals and giving Albarado his third of four victories on the afternoon.

As the 1-2 favorite, Thorn Song returned mutuels of $3, $2.40 and $2.10. Obi Wan Kenobi, ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., paid $3.20 and $2.60 with Demarcation, who was another half-length back in third under Jesus Castanon, returned $3.40 to show.

The victory was the fifth in 18 career starts for the 5-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song and was worth $31,608 to increase his career earnings to $382,201.

Live racing resumes Wednesday at Churchill Downs with a nine-race program that begins at 1:15 p.m. ET. There’s a Pick 6 carryover on Races 4-9 of $6,242.92.

Le Dauphin Annexes Friday Feature

(June 6, 2008) – Saud bin Khaled’s Le Dauphin outgamed Valtrus in stretch-long duel to prevail by a neck and win Friday afternoon’s $43,100 allowance feature race at Churchill Downs for 3-year-olds and up.

Sent off as the 9-5 favorite and giving jockey Robby Albarado his third victory of the afternoon, Le Dauphin returned mutuels of $5.60, $3.20 and $2.10. Valtrus, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, returned $3.40 and $2.40, while Glee Club, ridden by Calvin Borel, finished 5 ½ lengths back in third and paid $2.40 to show.

Le Dauphin, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Tale of the Cat trained by Bill Mott, covered the 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:42.58 in defeating six rivals. The victory was the second in 15 career starts and was worth $27,031 to improve his career earnings to $108,251.
