(June 19, 2008) – Scarlet Stable’s Canela took the lead soon after the start and never relinquished it in winning the $45,200 SIOR Cup on Thursday afternoon at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Miguel Mena and trained by Mike Maker, Canela shook off a challenge from favored Biggerbadderbetter at the head of the stretch and pulled away for a 1 ½-length victory in the field of six allowance runners.

A 5-year-old son of El Corredor, Canela covered the 1 1/8 miles on firm turf in 1:49.66 to remain perfect in three tries over the Matt Winn Turf Course and win for the 14th time in 36 starts to increase his lifetime earnings to $262,699.

Canela returned mutuels of $8.60, $3.80 and $2.60. Biggerbadderbetter, ridden by Robby Albarado, returned $2.60 and $2.20 while Fifty Five, ridden by Julien Leparoux, finished another half-length back in third and paid $3.20 to show.
