WS Farish Jr’s Seaside Retreat roared from off the pace to win the $60,000 feature race for three-year-olds and up by two lengths over even-money favorite Crested on Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.

A five-year-old gelded son of King Cugat, Seaside Retreat covered the mile and one-eighth on “firm” turf in 1:49.72 and gave jockey Shaun Bridgmohan his third victory of the afternoon.

Trained by Mark Casse, Seaside Retreat was fifth in the field of six entering the stretch. Bridgmohan swung Seaside Retreat to the outside for clear sailing and caught the leaders at the eighth pole and drew clear.

Seaside Retreat, who ran 10th in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, rewarded his backers with payoffs of $19.40, $6.40 and $3.60. Crested, ridden by Julien Leparoux, returned $2.60 and $2.10. Embossed, who finished another three-quarters of a length back in third under Larry Melancon, paid $2.40 to show.

The victory was worth $37,560 and increased Seaside Retreat’s earnings to $566,506.
