(June 18, 2008) – Jockey Jamie Theriot became the seventh rider in Churchill Downs history to ride six winners in a single day. He accomplished the feat Wednesday on only seven mounts, an achievement last achieved by Pat Day on Nov. 15, 1984, one of four times Day won six races on a single card in addition to a track-record seven-win day.

Julien Leparoux and Calvin Borel had six-win days during the Spring Meet last year, but Leparoux achieved his six wins from nine mounts on June 27, and Borel accumulated his from eight mounts on July 5.

Theriot’s sixth win of the day came aboard Mr. Nightlinger in the afternoon’s headline event. Owned by Carl Moore Management and the Martin Racing Stable, Mr. Nightlinger captured the $50,400 five-furlong turf sprint by 2 ¼ lengths over Probation Ready in :56.73 over firm ground.

Trained by Bret Calhoun, Mr. Nightlinger won for the second time in as many starts over the Churchill Downs turf. He won the May 2 Aegon Turf Sprint (GIII) with Theriot aboard. Mr. Nightlinger paid $3.40 as the favorite in the field of six.

Theriot, a 29-year-old native of Arnaudville, La., also won aboard Time to Getit (Race 1, $24.60), Flying Jazz (Race 2, $11.80), Symbology (Race 4, $3), Curvature (Race 5, $6.40) and Matty’s Trail (Race 7, $13). He finished sixth on his other mount of the day.

“I just rode them like the races came up and got lucky with the first two longshots,” said Theriot, who previously had won five races on single programs at Evangeline Downs, Fair Grounds, Lone Star Park and Oaklawn Park. “From there on, I thought ‘I’m pretty live the rest of the day.’ I had a great day – a real great day.”

Theriot has won 10 races over the past two racing days at Churchill Downs and the victories leapfrogged Theriot past Shaun Brigmohan and Borel into fourth place in the jockey standings with 38 wins at the Spring Meet.
