Champion Beholder, Array of Rising Stars Head 2013 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager
Feb 27, 2013 John Asher
Churchill Downs Racetrack’s only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”) betting pool for 2013 features reigning 2-year-old filly champion Beholder; major stakes winners Dreaming of Julia, Executiveprivilege and Live Lively and an array of rising 3-year-old filly stars, but fans are expected to settle on the Mutuel Field (#24), also known as “All Others”, as the favorite in this week’s three-day betting pool.
Oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has installed “All Others” as the 3-1 favorite in his morning line odds for the 2013 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which runs concurrent with its companion Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Betting on both wagers will open at noon (all times Eastern) on Friday, March 1. Wagering in the Derby pool will conclude at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, while betting on the Oaks pool will close at 6:30 p.m.
The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager offers racing fans an opportunity to bet on potential contenders for America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies well in advance of the race at odds that could be significantly more attractive than those that will be available in Kentucky Oaks Day wagering.
The $1 million-guaranteed Kentucky Oaks will be run for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 3, the eve of the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Oaks will be televised live from 5-6 p.m. on the NBC Sports Network.
Like its companion Kentucky Derby Future Wager, the Oaks Future pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1 minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, but betting on an individual filly will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Oaks.
The “All Others” wagering interests includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual betting interests in the Oaks Future Pool. The favored individual fillies in Battaglia’s morning line are the Ken McPeek-trained Hollywood Starlet (GI) winner Pure Fun (#15) and Unlimited Budget (#23), who ran her unbeaten string for trainer Todd Pletcher to three with a victory in the Rachel Alexandra (GIII) at Fair Grounds. Battalglia lists both fillies at 10-1.
Beholder (#1) sewed up the Eclipse Award for champion 2-year-old filly when the daughter of Henny Hughes rolled to a front-running victory in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Santa Anita. But the Richard Mandella-trained filly finished second to Renee’s Titan (#16, 20-1) in her 2013 debut in the Santa Ynez (GII) at Santa Anita and is listed by Battaglia as a 15-1 Kentucky Oaks Future risk.
Other fillies expect to attract strong support in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool include Frizette (GI) winner Dreaming of Julia (#5, 12-1); Live Lively (#10, 12-1), who defeated Dreaming of Julia in last week’s Davona Dale (GII) at Gulfstream Park; and Midnight Lucky (#11, 12-1), an impressive winner of her lone start at Santa Anita.
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has four fillies among the Oaks Future betting interests to lead all trainers. Mott’s fillies are Calistoga (#2, 20-1), Close Hatches (#4, 20-1), Emollient (#6, 15-1) and Flashy Gray (#9, 15-1).
Information on the Kentucky Oaks is available online at the official event Web site at www.KentuckyOaks.com and KDFW real-time odds will be presented on that site throughout each three-day betting pool.
The individual wagering interests for the KOFW pool are chosen by a committee that includes Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form; Brisnet.com Marketing Director Ed DeRosa; and Churchill Downs’ John Asher.
