Mr. Money Easily Wins Grade III, $150,000 Matt Winn

Mr. Money, winner of the $400,000 Pat Day Mile (Grade III) on Kentucky Derby, returned to the Churchill Downs winner’s circle Saturday night after scoring a decisive 6 ½-length win over Signalman in the 22^nd running of the $150,000 Matt Winn (Grade III) for 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Gabriel Saez, Mr. Money sat just behind pacesetter Knicks Go, who led the field of seven through quarter-mile fractions of :24.19, :47.80 and 1:11.35. Midway around the final turn, Mr. Money ranged up to the leader’s outside, grabbed the lead and drew off down the lane for the comfortable win.

Mr. Money, owned by Chester Thomas’ Allied Racing Stable LLC and trained by Bret Calhoun, clocked 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:42.28.

The victory was worth $91,140 and boosted Mr. Money’s bankroll to $491,220 with a record of 3-2-0 from eight starts.

Mr. Money returned $3.20, $2.40 and $2.20 as the odds-on favorite. Signalman, ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., returned $4 and $2.60 and finished two lengths in front of Proverb who paid $3.60 to show under Calvin Borel.

Armistice Day, Knicks Go, Limonite and Nolo Contesto completed the order of finish.

Mr. Money is a Kentucky-bred son of Goldencents out of the Tiznow mare Penty O’Toole. He was bred by Spruce Lane Farm.

The Matt Winn honors the famed Churchill Downs president and general manager that served as the driving force in the development of Churchill Downs and Kentucky Derby.
