Why the Stephen Foster Stakes Purse Was Increased to $2 Million — And How It Changed the 2026 Race
The 2026 Stephen Foster Stakes was already one of the most important races for older dirt horses in North America.
Then Churchill Downs doubled the purse.
By increasing the Stephen Foster Stakes purse from $1 million to $2 million, Churchill Downs elevated its signature summer race into one of the richest and most significant events on the racing calendar. The result is a field that includes reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio, Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude, and Grade I winner Baeza.
The purse increase has transformed the 2026 Stephen Foster Stakes from a major Grade I race into a true midsummer championship event.
Why Did Churchill Downs Increase the Stephen Foster Stakes Purse?
Churchill Downs announced in May that the purse for the Grade I Stephen Foster would double from $1 million to $2 million, making it one of the richest races in the country for older horses during the summer months.
The decision reflects the continued growth of Stephen Foster Day and the race's increasing importance on the road to the Breeders' Cup Classic.
'Stephen Foster Day has grown tremendously over the last several years attracting some of the world's best horses, and this purse boost helps solidify our closing weekend as a must-see premier racing event,' said Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson.
The race now offers connections an opportunity to compete for more than $1 million in winner's prize money while also securing an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Classic through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series' 'Win and You're In' program.
How the $2 Million Purse Changed the 2026 Stephen Foster Stakes Field
The most visible impact of the purse increase can be seen in the quality of the horses entered.
The 2026 Stephen Foster Stakes field includes:
- Horse of the Year Sovereignty
- Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio
- Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude
- Pennsylvania Derby winner Baeza
- Hollywood Gold Cup winner Forged Steel
- Pimlico Special winner Navajo Warrior
- Multiple stakes winner Willy D's
Collectively, the Stephen Foster horses have earned more than $25 million on the racetrack and have won some of the sport's biggest events, including the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes, Breeders' Cup Classic, Pegasus World Cup, Dubai World Cup, Pennsylvania Derby, Hollywood Gold Cup, and Pimlico Special.
While elite horses have long targeted the Stephen Foster, the increased purse helped create additional incentive for connections to make Churchill Downs a summer destination.
Sovereignty, White Abarrio and Magnitude Create a Rare Summer Showdown
Rarely does a summer race bring together so many accomplished older dirt horses.
Sovereignty returns to Churchill Downs for the first time since his Kentucky Derby victory and enters the race as the reigning Horse of the Year.
White Abarrio arrives off a victory over Sovereignty in the Oaklawn Handicap and already owns victories in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Pegasus World Cup.
Magnitude ships to Louisville following a victory in the Dubai World Cup and enters on a three-race winning streak that also includes the Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs.
The presence of those three stars alone would make the Stephen Foster one of the most anticipated races of the summer. Adding Grade I winner Baeza and a pair of recent graded stakes winners in Forged Steel and Navajo Warrior has created arguably the deepest Stephen Foster Stakes field in recent memory.
Stephen Foster Stakes Purse Increase Continues Race's Growth
The purse increase comes as Stephen Foster Day continues to generate record interest from fans and horseplayers.
Last year's Stephen Foster Day card produced an event-record $20.7 million in all-sources wagering, a 10% increase over the previous year.
Churchill Downs has steadily positioned Stephen Foster Day as one of the premier racing programs of the summer, featuring seven stakes races worth more than $4 million combined in 2026.
In addition to the Stephen Foster, the card includes:
- Grade II Fasig-Tipton Fleur de Lis
- Grade II Wise Dan
- Grade III Bango
- American Derby (Listed)
- Anchorage (Listed)
- Tepin (Listed)
Why the Stephen Foster Matters Beyond the Purse
The Stephen Foster has long played an important role in determining championship honors.
Four winners of the race—Black Tie Affair, Saint Liam, Curlin, and Gun Runner—used victories in the Stephen Foster as part of Horse of the Year campaigns. Two runners-up, Mineshaft and Wise Dan, also went on to earn Horse of the Year honors.
That history, combined with the race's Breeders' Cup implications, makes the Stephen Foster one of the most influential races of the summer.
A New Era for the Stephen Foster Stakes
The 2026 edition feels different.
A $2 million purse. A Breeders' Cup Classic berth on the line. The reigning Horse of the Year. A Breeders' Cup Classic winner. A Dubai World Cup champion. Multiple recent graded stakes winners.
The Stephen Foster has always been a prestigious race at Churchill Downs. This year, the purse increase helped elevate it into one of the most important and compelling events of the entire summer racing season.
When the gates open beneath the Twin Spires on June 27, the race will showcase exactly what Churchill Downs envisioned when it doubled the purse: a true Summer Showdown featuring some of the best older dirt horses in the world.
